Mindy Wagner, PetAssage owner and masseuse, tells us why Animal Massage is important for the happiness and
well-being of your pet!
Massage is a gentle and non-invasive therapy that can relieve
pain and stress. It can also help manage certain conditions such as arthritis,
and hip dysplasia, and can be beneficial when used in conjunction with therapies
such as chemotherapy and orthopedic surgery.
Animals who have experienced abuse may become more comfortable
with touch and can be more trusting.
Why Massage?
Resistance and/or lack of willingness to move in a particular
direction can be signs that your animal companion has muscular discomfort.
Tight or painful muscles can elicit unwanted behavioral changes.
Massage techniques, properly applied, can release muscle
spasms and soreness. Techniques such as passive touch, effleurage and cross
fiber frictions, applied appropriately, can make significant changes in
muscle stiffness and soreness.
Benefits of Massage:
- Stimulates circulation
- Healthier coat
- Stimulates immune system
- Relieves muscle stiffness
- Reduces stress and anxiety
A Brief History of Massage
Massage practices have been documented as far back as 17,000 BC with a pictograph, and the oldest written book on medicine, dating back 4500 years, refers to massage as a part of staying healthy and recovering from illness.
Massage did not come to America until the late 1800's and it has only been since the first half of the 20th century that medical practitioners have found many benefits for their patients. Massage is part of the total health care of any individual and should be used in conjunction with emotional, nutritional and biochemical balancing.
Massage Today
Massage can be used to help relieve stiffness, swelling, numbness, pain and discomfort. The demand for therapeutic massage is increasing as the focus of health care from the holistic point of view becomes for widely used.
