Below are based on experience and mixed with my opinions, you can go right ahead and try them out, just be careful. If you are a large business with money to toss at ppc or can buy your own traffic then this won't matter. But for all those mom and pop websites, this could be incredibly depressing to have happen to them...
*Animal Pages does not endorse any affiliate using Commission Junction (CJ). Commission Junction policy is to cancel your account if you do not send what they deem is enough traffic/sales in the first 6 months. As you know, any new site by a small business owner takes time to build traffic to and 6 months is just not enough in most cases. After you spend time finding appropriate affiliates and then put their links all over your site, CJ cancels your account (without notifying you) and you are sending hard earned traffic to them for free. This is very bad business and all we can do is warn others of this potential theft of what should be your money (you know they don't give it back to the affiliate who paid them) and hope that no one else gets burned by this company. If you prefer to get proof (which you should) please do a Google or Yahoo Search regarding complaints about CJ cancelling accounts.
**ShareASale also has the option to cancel your account if you don't login for long periods of time. They call it an "inactive" or "abandoned account". I call it theft...check this out (from their own Terms) Affiliate accounts that are left inactive will be removed from our system if their balance is equal to or less than $25. If an abandoned affiliate account has a balance between $25 and $50, a $25 fee will be assesed once per calendar month, until the balance is equal to zero dollars - and is closed. At no time will an affiliate ever owe monies to Shareasale.com, Inc. based on fees - the account will simply be closed. An abandoned affiliate account is defined as any account that has not been logged in to for a period of 6 months, nor have any transactions been posted to that account. If one or the other of those conditions are true - the account will remain in an active state. - Ok...The same applies with the 6 month thing that I said about CJ. They want you to put up their links and then just as you get traffic flowing through and clicking, they cancel your account. I don't know about all webmasters, but I don't have time to go visit all my affiliate accounts, I basically build it, promote it and cash the checks when they come. I might review the traffic and sales stats every 6 months or so to make sure it's living up to it's potential, but I'm not logging into my affiliate programs daily or even weekly - I'd be on affiliate control pages all day if I had to do that. There is no reason why an affiliate account should be closed. Unless it's cancelled for something like spam or fraud, then they should just leave it alone. They don't have room to keep your info? What, all 72k of it? And I'm sure they are just too busy to take your traffic that they stole from you too. Sorry, but I have some big affiliate programs that for one reason or another I stopped promoting, and then resumed after 2 or 3 years...and guess what? I still had accounts there. My residual $3.47 (or enter some other small amount) was still there. So, it's a choice that the Super Affiliate Wally World-like Programs make, and it's all about the cash that you've got accumulated in there. It may not be much, but after they cancel a thousand or so accounts each month...it adds up.
