H.O.R.S.E. Rescue and Sanctuary

H.O.R.S.E. Rescue and Sanctuary

From their website:

"A Message From The Founders

H.O.R.S.E. Rescue and Sanctuary started as a private enterprise in 1993 with one old scared horse named Gabby. This old mare was found thin and hidden in a dark stall in a boarding facility. Why she was there, we didn't know and we didn't care. We only knew that we had to get her out of there. A deal was negotiated with the stable owner and Gabby was purchased for $100. After getting her home, we found that at some point in her life, she had been shot through the neck below the spine. She had a small entry wound scar on one side and a large four-inch exit wound scar on the other side. She had scars on her rump and we could only conclude that she had been beaten with something. She was swaybacked and stringhalted. Gabby lived and thrived with us for two and a half years before she was euthanized. Gabby was our first rescue and our first equine friend to cross the Rainbow Bridge. Gabby started us on an irreversible course that has consumed twelve years of our lives and much of our income. Because of her, H.O.R.S.E. Rescue and Sanctuary was founded in 1996 and received our tax-exempt 501(C)(3) in 1997. Four hundred horses and twelve years have passed since that first fateful meeting in a dark stall.

Our mission is to save as many horses as we can with the time we have left on this earth and we do it one horse at a time but we can't do it without your help. The rescue is an all volunteer organization, no salaries are paid. We have been fortunate to have a solid core of volunteers here in New York. The facility is close to the State University of New York in Geneseo and most of our volunteers are students there. We have volunteers of all ages from eight years old to sixty-five years old. All do their part in keeping the horses healthy and happy. If you can donate money or time and would like to be involved in saving the lives of these magnificent animals, please call or drop us an e-mail. Become involved with a rescue near you. Most are listed on our links page and most rescues need help in the form of donations or volunteers. Take action on the bills now before Congress and the Senate to stop the horrific slaughtering of an American heritage for human consumption abroad. Report suspected abuse to the proper authorities or to a rescue near you. They will know who should be contacted.

We hope you enjoy your tour of our website but please remember that most of these horses were once in serious trouble either from abuse, abandonment, neglect or slaughter-bound. Their lives are now much happier and they have been given a second chance to become loved and wanted, but there are still so many that need some sort of crisis intervention. There are thousands that we can't help but with your help we can save one at a time.
